HOW TO CLEAN SILVER JEWELRY

In order to clean silver jewlery is important to know that Silver .925 (sterling silver) is 92.5 % pure silver and 7.5 % Copper.

This is because silver is very soft and would be impossible to make nice jewelry without using another metal to make it workable.

This is important to know because silver and copper have different properties and react different to different elements.

SILVER PROPERTIES

Silver is a verty ductile and malleable metal with a white metallic luster that can take a high degree of polish.

Silver is stable in pure air and water, but tarnishes when it is exposed to air or water containing ozone or hydrogen sulfide to form a black layer of silver sulfide which can be cleaned off with dilute hydrochloric acid.

COPPER PROPERTIES

Copper is easily worked, being both ductile and malleable.

Copper has a reddish, orangish, or brownish color because a thin layer of tarnish (including oxides) gradually forms on its surface when gases (especially oxygen) in the air react with it.

Copper does not react with water, but it slowly reacts with atmospheric oxygen forming a layer of brown-black copper oxide.

Exposed at humidity the haloges attack very easily to copper.

Sulfuric Acid are used for taking off the cape and Nitric Acid for polishing.

Nitric Acid disolves copper acid, polishing the metal and creating copper citrate.

IF SILVER JEWELRY GETS DARK THEN IT MEANS IT IS NOT SILVER OR POOR QUALITY SILVER?

Not Neccesarily.

1) Silver .800 coverted wiht another element may get not dark but the quality of silver still less than .925.

2) A piece of Fantasy Jewelry may not get dark but it is not silver .925

3)Why do people believe then that if jewlery gets darker fast means low quality silver? If you make 2 identical jewelry pieces, the same moment and expose them to identicail conditions, if one of them is silver .925 and the other one is .750, as copper reacts to more elements is probable it gets darker first the one is not .925.

4) In other cases when you buy in unformal places in Mexico, sometimes some of them use "Alpakar" which is an alloy of Copper, Ncikel and Zinc Otros caso que se puede dar cuando se compra joyeria en comercios informales es que se venda Alpaca por Plata. La Alpaca es una aleacion de Cobre, Niquel y Zinc y obviamente se ensuciará muy rapido por las caracteristicas de los elementos.

*Tip: Find a formal supplier.

TAKING CARE OF SILVER JEWELRY

If we analize the properties of both, we can tell both react to very common elements in the environment so in order to avoid to get our silver jewelry dark we need to keep it after use in an hermetic box or bag.

Aanother option is to give to the jewelry a cover bath of another element. In Europe is very common to use Rodiumm so you dont need to clean your jewelry but it gis the piece a very metallic aspect and takes away the shniny beautiful natural color.

As jewelry has been maden to use it and make us look great so the best thing we can do is use it and if ever gets dark it is very easy to clean the jewlery. We show you how on this video.
